Kerio Winroute Firewall - security and control in one package

A survey was recently conducted to find out why companies use Kerio Winroute Firewall. The results of the survey were surprising, it turned out that it is not because of the firewall features, but rather the other capabilities that make the software enticing.

The post-installation setup can begin

Let's see these! At the top are the most important and at the bottom the least useful features:

  • Internet connection sharing
  • anti Virus
  • P2P filtering
  • Relationship rendundance
  • Load balancing between Internet connections
  • Bandwidth management
  • User access control
  • Firewall / Proxy
  • Browsing control and content filtering
Is the result surprising? We can say that it is, though on better thought out, not yet. The survey was definitely good to see, one of the least preferred features of firewall software is the firewall feature. However, features that help optimize work and resources have come to the fore. To see exactly what they are, let’s go through them!

Internet connection sharing

WinRoute supports DSL, cable, ISDN, satellite, analog modem, and wireless Internet connections, sharing them, and depending on the complexity of the network, we can also use the built-in DHCP server. Relationship sharing primarily helps to make efficient use of resources.

anti Virus

You can purchase the program without or with an antivirus. If you choose the version without virus protection, you can later integrate an antivirus engine. If you choose the affordable anti-virus version, you will find the McAfee Antivirus solution in it. It monitors outgoing and incoming email as well as web http and FTP traffic. Among the popular features, this is what is really one of the traditional firewall software features. For those who decide that an antivirus is not enough, there is a solution. Other engines can be integrated with McAfee, so we can even perform parallel filtering.

The whole operation takes place in seconds…

P2P filtering

The software is able to detect most file sharing applications, so you can even disable the use of such programs completely. This will hit more birds with one stone. On the one hand, there will be less network traffic, the existing internet bandwidth will not go to downloads. On the other hand, we can prevent employees from getting unchecked or possibly illegal software on their machines, which in turn can come in very handy if they keep the company in check, as we can save a considerable amount of fines. However, filtering does not stop in disable enable mode. With Kerio Winroute Firewall, you can assign resources to each application separately, which means you can determine how much bandwidth your services can manage.

Relationship redundancy

It saves time and money, as the software is able to manage several connections together, and in the event of a missing connection, turn on the line connected as a backup.

Load balancing between Internet connections

This point is partly related to connection sharing and connection redundancy, as it is suitable for optimally distributing the load for multiple connections, which may even be different.

… And it really only takes a few minutes

Bandwidth management

Bandwidth management is suitable for limiting the bandwidth used by employees. With this tool, again, we can only “save” on bandwidth. However, it is also suitable to give some software and protocols an advantage, such as higher bandwidth for VoIP applications and less for file changers.

User access control

Again, this feature is only suitable for restricting users' use of the Internet. You can create rules for individual users, or even groups, to grant permissions to access resources.

Firewall / Proxy

I think these are the tasks that a user uses to identify firewall software the most. The goal is to use the Internet safely, that is, to pull a wall we control between the internal network and the Internet.

Browsing control and content filtering

Perhaps we should be glad that this point came to the bottom of the list. I’m not saying the feature is useless, as it allows us to monitor what pages our employees turn to, what words they search on Google, and thousands more. Occasionally, these can be useful features, as along with logging capabilities, you can retrieve individual events that have occurred on the network. However, employees are likely to be less fond of this feature, as who likes to see what they read during business hours?

However, Kerio Winroute Firewall also has a feature that has been left out of the list above, yet I feel it is important to say a few words about it. This is nothing more than a VPN, that is, a virtual private network in Hungarian. This service allows company employees to access the corporate network remotely. The service has two main components. One is the VPN server itself, and the other is the VPN client, which needs to be installed on our machine and in which we can enter the information needed to access the network, such as the username and password. There is also a solution for those who do not work on a Windows-based machine. They can access the network through their browser and perform basic operations such as downloading and uploading files.
