IT security Gateprotect In a representative survey of a firewall manufacturer, Hungarian employees answered whether they used social networking sites at their workplaces.

According to the results, 1,5 percent of the approximately 26 million Hungarian employees with Internet access at work visit at least once a day or even several times, and 29 percent occasionally visit a social networking site. In other words, more than 800 Hungarian workers, 55 percent of all employees with Internet access at work, spend part of their working time on Facebook.

“Our research has shown that it is mainly those with tertiary education who make Facebook on their workplace. On the one hand, this is natural, as many of them have access to the Internet because of their jobs, and on the other hand, it raises the problem that the highest paid layer spends their working time on social media. ” - emphasizes András Petrányi-Széll, Head of Communications at Gateprotect Hungary. Of the employees who visit a community site several times a day, 63 percent are male, 54 percent have a tertiary education, 57 percent are under the age of 30, and 51 percent are from Budapest. They are the typical Facebookers at work.

The use of social networking sites in the workplace has also become a significant issue in Germany in recent years, says Stephan Ziegler, Head of Development at Gateprotect. For this reason, like the Hamburg firewall manufacturer, several German technology companies, including the anti-virus manufacturer G Data, have decided to extend the functionality of their products by restricting access to various websites. For Gateprotect, this means that employers can easily restrict Internet access based on content categories and applications.

According to András Petrányi-Széll, while employees expect their workplace to provide access to social media as a service, employers have not yet learned how to deal with the problem well and are too shy to impose restrictions. In the survey, only 19 percent of Hungarian employees with Internet access at work stated that they do not visit social networking sites during their working hours because their workplace has already restricted access to them.
