AMD kills Athlon!

Let’s break down the image a bit, AMD isn’t going to stop CPU production, it’s just getting rid of the Athlon brand.

We can say that the Athlon is the AMD Pentiuma. The name has already merged properly with products from smaller CPU manufacturers, but as you can see from Intel’s example, sometimes it doesn’t hurt to replace proven names. The larger manufacturer took the Pentium out in one go, introduced the name Core, and we soon got used to it.

AMD reportedly decided to take a similar step. This is suspected to be related to the arrival of the K10 core, which is expected to open a new page in AMD’s life. The brand name that will come instead of Athlon will be Phenom, from which we will immediately get to know four versions.

Phenom FX will be the processor for the servers. The desktop version comes with the Phenom X4 which is quad-core and the Phenom X2 which will be the dual-core solution.

Changing the brand name is not alone. The notation of processors will also change, and the slightly outdated plus notation will finally be a thing of the past. Instead, we will get a four-digit code (this is familiar from somewhere 🙂).

Our source news cites as an example a processor called the AMD Phenom X4 2500, which is expected to mark the 2,50 GHz quad-core Agena CPU based on the K10 core.
