Socket AM2 coming soon!

AMD has officially brought forward the release of the AM2 socket.

DailyTech has received information from Taiwanese manufacturers that AMD will schedule May 2006, 6, two weeks earlier, instead of June 2006, 23, for the official launch of the new socket. One reason for this is that it is unnecessary to wait with it because processors and motherboards have been on the market for a long time. According to DailyTech, the earlier date is not only because the devices are ready, but also because AMD doesn’t want to be late in competing with Intel’s rival Conroe processors.

So AMD's roadmap for this year is as follows:

May 16: Announces Roadmap and Price for Energy Efficient Processors That Use More Electricity and Produce Less Heat May 23: Announces the AM2 Socket and Related Desktop Processors May 31: AMD LIVE! desktop system announcementHow is it worth switching to another AMD socket? Well, in terms of prices, the placement of AM2 socket processors hasn't changed much compared to their 939-encapsulated counterparts, but it doesn't always deliver the expected results in terms of performance.
