LG AF115 - The Quality Home Cinema Projector

Peeling off the projector required a separate location to meet the requirements described on the previous page. As a result, we took the AF115 to LSK Hungária, where we were greeted by a separate basement cinema prepared for this - or rather similar purpose. Zoltán Kuthy, the technical director of the company, took part in the examination, who certainly did not leave a minute's rest to our protagonist during his time there.

First, let's say a few words about the room! In terms of size, it has a floor area of 4 m x 6,5 m, which practically corresponds to a slightly above-average living room. The designers strove to make the room meet the expectations as much as possible, which is why, as you can see in the picture, it "splendours" in gray and black colors. The use of directional lights is also important, since diffused lighting — like, for example, sunlight — can have an undesirable effect in terms of image characteristics. (The strange "sponges" on the side walls are there for acoustic reasons.)

It is no accident that the dark colors dominate the room

Let’s look at a list level of who else was there to help us with the test:

  • Canvas: Projecta Homescreen Matt White; 140 × 236 (cm)
  • Source (HDMI):
    • DVD: Denon DVD-1930 (upgraded to 1080p)
    • HDTV: HelloHD STB (1080i)
    • HD: Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop (1080p)

Most of it was scanned from DVD, and the calibration was also performed using this source. The answer to why is simple: on the one hand, HP's dedicated disc has served an excellent service, and most publications are still available in this format when it comes to optical media.

In the first step, after unpacking, we placed our delicacies on the stand and made the geometric adjustments with the help of a fictional test chart (we pushed the fabric back and forth, and also slightly hurt the zoom and lens shift) - but we could have used the image stored in the projector . We then went to a chapter with our DVD player and looked at the overscant, which we found okay (only very minimal in value):

After all this, the "live" test could come, a compilation disc was inserted into the DVD player, and the real projection started. Zoltán Kuthy almost fell back when he saw the picture, then gathered all his strength and said: AF115 is not an "out of box" product. The other thing he couldn't get over was the remote control. It's one thing that we have to press a separate button to advance the backlight, but if we remain idle for 5 seconds — more precisely, trying to understand the specifics of the menu system that is presented to us — then this function must be activated again. Maybe even this would have been allowed, but our expert could not get to the bottom of the agenda, that when making adjustments in the menu, one should not activate an option by pressing the OK button, but with the left and right arrows, and if by chance we still go to OK, then the menu jumps back one.

First, we changed the Picture Mode from Vivid to Cinema - unfortunately we are forced to use English terms, as the Hungarian language is not available for the AF115 - which improved our picture by an order of magnitude. But that still wasn't enough, so we activated Expert1, which also made the gamma settings available. (We would like to note here that if we damaged any factory preset, our main character indicated this to us with a "user" suffix after exiting/saving, for example: Vivid(user) - this is a very ingenious solution.)
