LG AF115 - The Quality Home Cinema Projector

Before we summarize what happened, here are two things we haven’t talked about yet. One is optics, which is a vital part of a projector. We can't complain about the zoom coverage, but unfortunately overall we would rather give a black dot to the applied lens set. We examined the machine in a near-wide-angle position, and the degree of chromatic aberration was certainly very strong here. For those who are not so sensitive, this is not such a big problem, or it is conceivable that this undesirable phenomenon will decrease in a close-up position.

A very rough example of chromatic aberration is defined as: in the presence of chromatic aberration (longitudinal or transverse chromatic aberration), the imaged image has a colored border even though the object does not. This is because the lenses refract light rays of different wavelengths differently.

It was not mentioned on the previous page that in the last half hour of our stay, a Panasonic full HD LCD projector (PT-AE3000) was also found, which is roughly the same price as the LG. We have already talked about the fact that its menu system contains many more options, but it has not yet been mentioned that it also offers more services (for example: lens memory). There is also an indisputable advantage: there is also an automatic calibration mode in the menu, which was activated after selecting the appropriate color mode, and approx. In 10 seconds, we got the same result as after more than 2 hours of "clowning" with the AF115.

It’s time to break a wand over our test subject! Although we’ve said a few negatives about our protagonist, we can state: the LG AF115 is a very good projector that provides first-class entertainment to the vast majority of users. Being LCOS technology - which is SXRD here too - you can move into our living room with a quality home cinema that leaves nothing to be desired. However, we can’t go without saying that serious hobbyists or professionals are unlikely to consider the AF115 - basically for two reasons: poor adjustment options and chromatic aberration.

How would you sum up the performance provided by the projector in a few sentences, knowing the price tag? It definitely deserves a good rating, however, professional calibration — which is hindered by the narrow set-up options — is a basic requirement (so we have to add the costs of this to the purchase price), since we are not talking about an "out of the box" product at all. We definitely recommend it for 1080p material — preferably a (HT)PC drive — as its video processing capabilities can only be said to be average. For those who are bothered by chromatic aberration, we cannot wholeheartedly recommend the projector, but thanks to the high brightness and zoom range - as well as the lens shift - it is easy to place it, which can be a decisive factor for many.

Let's summarize the good and bad qualities of our "mustache" protagonist!

What I liked:

+ impeccable resolution and pixel spacing
+ very good native contrast (up to 4000: 1 for the eyes)
+ quiet operation (Eco-mode)
+ huge brightness (1500-2000 ANSI lumens per eye)
+ easy placement (large zoom range, vertical lens shift)
+ design
+ affordable replacement lamp
+ well-functioning auto-iris

What I didn't like:

- high price
Chromatic aberration of optics
- no Hungarian language (no menu, no manual)
- few setting options
Concise manual

As an evaluation, you get a score of seven and a half only because of its relatively high price (the competition is great):
