Turbulence around the VIA

A few days ago with great pleasure we reported itthat VIA, albeit a little late, but will soon be ready with its latest chip sets. Now, however, there is some very sad news about them: they are not expected to support dual-core AMD processors.

This news is also interesting because, in principle, dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2s run smoothly on all previous standard Socket 939 motherboards, requiring a single BIOS update only to ensure compatibility. A VIA spokesman said the company is already working hard to fix the problem and will soon start shipping a new release to motherboard manufacturers, the only question is what will happen to what has been produced so far.

While the members of the K8T890 series so far will certainly not be able to serve dual-core AMD headunits, we also need to see that by the time they become a true mass product, they will be on a new motherboard anyway, for a new socket we will need. Adding to the curiosity of the thing is that VIA claims the problems just they affect the K8T890 series, meaning the K8T800 and K8T800 Pro handle the Athlon 64 X2 flawlessly as well.
