Japanese chip makers against Intel

The chip makers in the island nation appear to have weathered Intel’s dominance in the CPU market.

Seven major chip makers have formed alliances, including big names like Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu, NEC, Renesas, Panasonic and Canon. Their goal is to develop a new energy-saving processor by the end of 2012. Achieving this goal on the software front is aided by Professor Hironori Kasahara of Waseda University.

It is certain that Intel's new competitors are big names, just as it is certain that Japanese companies should not be taken lightly. However, 2012 is still a long way off, a lot of water needs to flow down the Sumum before we can test the new processor.
