Edimax at the dawn of the n-era
First we take the smallest box, in which came the USB interface. We can’t write too much interesting about this tool. Unpacking the box reveals the device itself, the installation CD, a USB extension cable, and an antenna.
The latter is perhaps the only accessory that may surprise the customer, as it is an unusually large antenna. It is 13 centimeters long and has a power of 3dBi according to the data shown. This data is striking because we are talking about a USB solution, and such transmit power is rare. Of course, this is natural, as the manufacturer promises a theoretical transmission bandwidth of 150 megabits per second above the ag standard. Although this does not reach the value according to the n standard, it is more than enough for normal office work.
Of course, the device also received EZmax to facilitate installation. Can also be used for Windows 2000 / XP / Vista and Mac. Windows 7 support is not yet included in the box, but we can be sure that we will not have any problems installing during the new operating system.
Our second nLITE device is already more interesting. This is a router that promises similar transfer speeds as the USB interface by its name. The device comes with 4 RJ-45 LAN ports, one RJ-45 WAN port and one USB connector. The latter is a real interesting feature of the device, as a USB 3G modem can be connected to this port. The device, marketed under the 3G 6200N model, is therefore suitable not only for sharing traditional cable / xDSL, but also for mobile 3G internet connection. 1, a year and a half ago we would have just shrugged our shoulders because it is good, but not so useful yet, but nowadays the situation seems to be changing. The area of 3,5G availability is growing and service providers are offering more and more affordable tariff packages. Because of this, in some areas, 3,5G may already be an alternative to a landline provider, but there are certainly areas where, due to low embeddedness, the only available broadband is mobile service.
In addition to the above capabilities of the router, it does not carry much novelty. In addition to the usual indicators on the front panel, you will find the 3G light. The wired network can be the usual 100 megabits.
