ASUS Eee PC 1004DN - luxury in a small way

We haven’t talked specifically about our protagonist’s energy hunger yet. Depending on the load level - and settings - the little one consumes between 20-25 W - at 50% brightness. It has already been said that the six-cell battery could even be killed due to its small size and specific high weight, but we are still indebted to measurements in this direction.

A close one about the battery

The 5200 mAh temporary backup storage is charged with approximately 40 watts — with the Eee PC turned off — which means that in practice we can reach 100% capacity within two hours. After that, we took a DivX movie with a resolution of 530 × 400, as well as MPC and ffdshow, in order to measure how long the battery can withstand "movies". Well, the result surprised us a little - of course in a positive way: we could enjoy the matinee for 4 hours in less than five minutes. The truth is that this meant a 20-25% processor load, in the case of an HD film, this time would certainly be less. (Two things immediately come to mind here. One is that even 1024p would be unnecessary on a 600 × 720 display; the other is that the consumption of the Atom CPU is so small that the difference here would probably be measured in minutes.)

The "set of stickers" located at the bottom of our Eee PC

The 1004DN does not get hot even with long-term use, rather it creates a "lukewarm" impression (we wouldn't call it warm), however, in the summer - or in the scorching sun - the situation may be different. We measured a difference of only 5 °C between the loaded and idle state of the CPU (the upper limit was a maximum of 68 °C even at a relatively high room temperature), which is due to the low TDP central unit and the fan control. In connection with the air stirrer, we should note that it does switch on during longer loads, and at that point the small machine already has plenty of sound.

We have reached the end of our tests, let the evaluation follow! It was already unpacked from our protagonist that we could greet a quality product in it - and this was proven even more during use. The 1004DN is characterized by a rugged design and sleek design compared to its features - and with these two features it can even stand out from the crowd of netbooks.

Folded

However, we note that this model is also somewhat of a curiosity within the ranks of ASUS. The 1004DN is already a bit beyond the original ideas of the Eee PC, which of course has its downsides - but we think the language of the scales tends to be more positive. A black dot could be awarded because our protagonist is a bit obese, which is no longer the very tiny portable net that many people use to identify Eee PCs.

On the other hand, it is an undoubted fact that not only the physical size, but also the area of use has increased thanks to the developments. The built-in DVD writer is considered an essential "extra" for many, thanks to its existence, there is no need to fool around with an external solution. And the Express Card slot greatly increases the expandability, for example, we can add a FireWire port (which is one of the quirks of the writer of these lines).

Discrete control lights

We believe that the 1004DN is a very successful piece from ASUS, last but not least, it fulfills the thesis of portability, which means that we can travel with us relatively easily around the world. We clearly liked our test subject, although we will be a little afraid of the official price at home, about which unfortunately we do not have information yet.
