A few days ago, an acquaintance of mine said he wanted to buy a phone for himself. The plan was a Xiaomi Note 4X, but since then there was a great promotion for the Redmi 5 Plus, in which it cost as much in HUF as last year's Note 4X, for a tiny urge he bought the new phone. It was then that I had the idea that it would not hurt to clarify the differences and, of course, the similarities between the two devices, to see if this would make the decision easier.

The outside

The first and most important thing is that the Note 4X is still made according to the "old" school, you could say a classic Xiaomi phone. The ratio of the display and the front panel, the resolution and the image diagonal all follow the "old" trend. On the other hand, the Redmi 5 Plus already represents the "new" direction, which is why the display is bigger, the resolution is different, and of course the proportions of the device have also changed.

What does this mean in practice? Here are:

As you can see, the older phone has a lower resolution, a smaller diagonal, and a lower pixel density, so we can say that the Plus is better than it. Foam on the cake is that due to the changed aspect ratio, which is 4: 16 for the 9X and 18: 9 for the Plus, the phone has become more elongated, and despite the larger display, the width has not increased, but on the contrary, minimally. but decreased. Foam on the cake that the thickness has also become smaller, making the new phone easier to hold and easier to use with one hand despite the increase in size. The only downside in this comparison is the increase in weight, but it was also to be expected as the phone got physically bigger as well. The difference is only 7 grams, which is not going to go against the wall

Design

As we wrote above, the look is fundamentally different because the Note 4X is from the beginning of last year and the Plus represents a new line already launched at the end of the year. Another difference is that in the case of the 4X we can choose from 5 colors, while in the case of the Plus we can only choose from four colors. The position of the cameras and the fingerprint reader is unchanged, but the frames on the front are thinner than last year’s model. Overall, the Plus gives the impression of a much fresher phone, while the Note 4X represents classic beauty.

Processor and memory

This is the point where we will find little difference. At Xiaomi, they decided that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 would be enough even this year, and we think they’re right about that. Pretty well done mid-range unit with eight cores, 2 GHz speed and Adreni 506 graphics accelerator. A difference can be detected between memory and mass storage. On last year's model we could still choose the 3GB RAM 16 GB ROM version, this year there is no such one anymore, the smallest storage is 32 GB.

So there’s no difference in performance, the Snapdragon 625 is already built on a modern 14-nanometer stripe width, has low power consumption and thrives with most games smoothly. There will be no problem playing videos, and there will be no networking with this processor.

Camera

The camera is a very important aspect of today's phones, which is why many customers choose one or the other device. Interestingly, when looking at dry data, the camera on the newer phone is worse. We don’t find any differences with the front camera, but more importantly, the rear camera doesn’t match the two phones. The Note 4X's camera has a 13-megapixel f / 2.0 aperture, while the newer phone works with a 12-megapixel sensor and f / 2.2 aperture optics. The only positive is that in the case of Plus, the size of the pixels is larger, but this is not surprising assuming the same tile in its physical size, we find 13 only 12 megapixels in the same area.

It is difficult to decide which camera is better without test images. Based on the numbers, the older one, but we can assume that this is not true, but at least it would be very strange. So we are uncertain on this issue for the time being, without a specific test we would bring the Note 4X out as the winner.

Battery

Again a neuralgic point. Despite the same strength of hardware, despite the larger display, the Note 4X's battery has more capacity. There is not much difference, only 100 mAh, so the Note 4X 4100- while the Redmi 5 Plus has a capacity of 4000 mAh. There is no difference of ekkpra in the factory-specified operating time, so there is something certain in the background. Which, in turn, is an advantage of the newer phone's ability to quickly charge.

The final conclusion is that the two phones are essentially the same except for the display, but that’s just the hardware. From the outside, the Plus is the more modern form, while the 4X follows the classic line. The question arises as to which one is worth buying.

If you like modern phones, it doesn’t matter which one you buy. If you want to buy the one that is stronger, you will be in trouble. We’re leaning towards new developments, but we have to realize that the realistic of the two phones will only be the Plus for better reception if it’s not much more expensive in price. As I mentioned in the introduction, you can already catch up on good promotions for the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, so for example, if the two phones are offered at the same price, we definitely recommend the Plus. If, on the other hand, the 4X is significantly cheaper, it wouldn’t be worth us a bigger display plus $ 20-30. At the moment, the difference between them is round $ 10, or HUF 2500, which is a borderline case, but perhaps it is more like tilting the balance tongue towards Redmi 5 Plus.
