Super expensive AMD processor arrives
The soon-to-be-launched new flagship has already shown up at a retailer.
The 32-core Threadripper 2990X may provide insane performance beyond controversy, but it looks like it will come at a serious price; on the German Cyberport website, you can put the beast in the basket for 1 euros (about half a million forints)! As the second generation of the Threadripper has not yet been officially announced by AMD, there is some chance that we will see more friendly numbers over time, but it’s worth keeping in mind that proportionally (unfortunately) this price tag is not current cannon, the 509-core Ryzen Threadripper 16X runs around € 1950.
According to the latest news, the beast in question could run at a base clock of 3,0 GHz, and the Turbo clock is expected to reach 3,8 GHz. The foundation is the previously introduced "Zen +" architecture, which produces slightly faster memory access than its predecessor. The chip, which is made with 12 nm manufacturing technology, can operate with relentlessly high energy requirements, the 250-watt TDP is by no means a common sight for a desktop processor, although not the 32 processor cores. The new series could hit the market in the third quarter, when the 24-core Threadripper could also start.
Believers on the other side don’t have to worry either, they can look forward to the brand new Cascade Lake-X series. The leader of high-end (HEDT) processors will be a 28-core type, which is likely to take the stage as a worthy opponent.
