Nintendo Wii: DVD playback only from 2007

Nintendo has taken a very strange step earlier, saying that its next-generation console, the Wii, does not support DVD movie playback by default.

The Nintendo Wii will premiere on November 19 in the United States. Impatient shoppers are likely to rush into stores right away to get a machine sharpened for the gaming experience. There’s no problem with that either, console sales always go that way, the only problem is that the early structures aren’t yet ready to play DVD movies, which we admit is a basic requirement these days.

As it stands, "upgraded" slot machines will only be available for purchase from the second half of 2007, which is more than half a year more than the premiere. It’s a question of whether it’s worth waiting that long. It’s up to everyone to decide for sure, Nintendo claims that a simple firmware upgrade won’t solve the problem, so it’s likely to be an improved model, meaning the more impatient will have to buy the gaming machine twice for full functionality.

The Japanese omitted this service, citing primarily financial reasons, as the incorporation of the DVD playback capability is subject to copyright and therefore has to be paid for. This would have led to an increase in the price of the console, and as we know, it is cheapness that is primarily in favor of the Wii.

In any case, Nintendo has taken the first step in the matter by entering into a contract with Sonic Solutions. Thanks to them, among others, the Easy Media Creator software package and the CinePlayer DVD player software, which will also be available on the Nintendo Wii.
