Since the protagonist of the article is a mechanical keyboard, let’s first discuss the difference between a mechanical and a traditional membrane solution!
Most and cheaper keyboards have a membrane design. These work in essentially the same way as the simplest TV remotes. Porously speaking, there is a PCB with wiring running on the surface and a well-conducting coating under the buttons. When the key is pressed, the conductive surface at the bottom of the membrane touches the surface below and closes the circuit.
The disadvantage of the membrane design is the relatively short lifespan (number of keystrokes) and the fact that there is not too much feedback from the keystroke towards our fingers, which causes it to easily miss a letter, especially if you have to quickly type duplicate characters one after the other.
The mechanical keyboard is completely different. Of course, you don’t have to think of mechanics like you did with old typewriters. Mechanism here means that there is a mechanically operated microswitch under the key. This results in an increase in the path of the key on the keystroke, the feedback on the keystroke is much more perceptible because here we feel the tiny click when the switch is switched on. Experts say that due to the long keyboard distance and the less defined lower point, the mechanical solution is also good for our fingers, and the joints are less stressed. Last but not least, the theoretical lifespan is much longer than with low-cost membrane solutions.
