There is a good chance that in Hungary - and in most parts of the world - there is no apartment without one or more extension cords, because in many cases our electrical appliances are not right next to the sockets, or if so, the number of available sockets is not always enough. Extenders were invented for this problem, which, over time, necessarily made evolutionary leaps to meet the requirements of the modern age. The solution that is now being presented, in terms of individual development, taking advantage of the current technological possibilities, is close to the top, as its knowledge does not consist of connecting four devices to a socket - it is capable of much more than that.

The structure itself has physical dimensions of 28,5 × 6 × 4,1 cm, weighs 516 grams, and is connected to a 215-centimeter power cord. It is white on the cover (also available in black) and has a gray cover on the side. It has 3 USB ports and 4 mains sockets, fortunately no converter is needed to use it, the device uses an EU standard plug and can also receive them. The manufacturer has also prepared it for short-circuiting, overvoltage, overheating and other problems - thanks to refractory materials - we don’t have to worry about flames in the event of a fault - but we should also expect this in 2019 from a quality smart device.

The maximum load capacity is 10 A / 2400 W, pay attention to this during use! USB sockets are age-appropriate, which means they automatically detect connected devices. They provide a maximum charging speed of 2,1 A per port and a maximum power of 5V / 2,1 A. These specifications would already be sufficient for most of us if it were just an average hub. But the good thing is yet to come: the extension can connect to a Wi-Fi network.

It knows the 2,4 GHz frequency, but it also supports b / g / n standards, and the WPA or WPA2 authentication protocol is no problem. This is necessary so that we can connect to the local network first and then to the Internet. Why? So that you can control it anytime, anywhere with the right app installed on your smartphone (in terms of network part, it manages the USB block at the same time per connector), it will be smart! And of course a lot of others, which I'll cover right away…

Use

The first step in using the tool is, of course, commissioning. I tried it on an Android phone (Honor 8 - Android 7.0), so I installed the Smart Life app on this operating system, which is most quickly obtained by reading the QR code from the product box. Once the app is installed, we need to quickly create an account with an email address and you can already have fun. For the first connection, it is advisable to read the manual and proceed as described there. You can add a new device by tapping the plus sign in the upper right corner, select the “Power Strip” product group from the “Electrical Engineering” category, and then press the “Start Device Connection” button.

Then select your WiFi network and enter the corresponding password (you can connect in both normal and AP mode, but you will need normal mode). In the next step, the software will start searching for the smart extended, the point is that the device will be ready to connect by this time, which is the case when the LED ring around the power button flashes quickly. Once the app has recognized the device and registered it on the network, you can select which location it is located in, so you can see them in spatial breakdown for multiple smart devices, but obviously all of them are listed. In my case, the smart distributor has entered the living room as a “smart socket”, but the name can be changed as needed.

The point is that you can click on its name to access the section from which the control can be performed. In this window, a simple drawing shows the extension with four mains sockets and 3 USB ports (the latter as a common block). By default, all interfaces are active, but if you tap one, that source will turn off on the device, in which case it will fade in the figure. Of course, it can be reactivated by tapping again. There are also small status LEDs on the KMOON distributor itself, which light up blue next to the given output when it is switched on, and the ring around the main switch is used to indicate the status of the entire smart extension on or off.

The main switch pictogram is of course also in the application, so not only the ports can be switched off, but also the complete device. We also have the option of creating various automations, such as a countdown of when to turn off a given output, and different timers with day / hour / minute breakdown to determine which outlet should be active or inactive. We can also create groups from a variety of smart devices, which we then program and combine as we wish, so the range of possibilities is essentially endless. Remote access is a great thing in itself, but the manufacturer has made sure that the product can work with big-name systems as well.

As a result, with the right tools, we have the ability to control the structure with our voices, as it is also compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and IFTTT. So you don't even have to press the app, just give the command, and we can make the connected devices work (in words we can turn off the night light, the kettle, the home theater, the TV, whatever).

Of course, I will also tell you why: In my opinion, the knowledge and application of smart devices in Hungary is still in its infancy, we are usually satisfied with a light switch, not a plain white, but some cheerful colored frame around it. Perhaps the reason for this may be that many people think smart solutions are expensive and do not know the capabilities, the possibilities. Yet, sourced from the right source, you absolutely don’t have to be in the top 10000 to turn your home into a smart home, even at the system level - if we go through the process in several stages, you don’t.

For this reason, I think everyone should give it a try, because when our home gets smarter, it's almost a matter of time, and of course money - but if we gradually build a system ourselves, we'll not only be proud of it, we'll be much cheaper. then out, as if we get there on behalf of “professionals”.
