Hundreds of core processors are coming!

The name of a new processor manufacturer was given to the world press after their central units were announced.

Tilera has been operating in San Jose for two years. Although the processor just presented has "only" 64 cores, it seems that there will be no obstacle to making processors with hundreds of cores using the company's technology.

The new processor breaks with the usual trend in many areas. Processor cores are not connected by a standard bus system, and leaving this bus system is the key to how many cores can work together. The cores for the 64-core unit now presented are arranged in an 8 x 8 grid, and each core is able to communicate with its neighbor on a data bus network developed by the company. The cores were each given 256 kb of second-level cache, which could even be arranged in a large array if needed.

The Tilera processor is not just a novelty in the number of cores. Everything you need for external I / O operations is integrated into the central unit, so you can forget not only the north but also the south bridge.

If that still wasn't enough, then the consumption figures follow. The 64-core chip consumes only 55 watts, while a "simple" 16-core copy only needs 5 watts.

The cores of Tilera's processor can also be interpreted as full-fledged processors, so the chip's usability is almost endless. It can also be used as a stand-alone CPU, but also as an additional processor, or it can be used to build various target hardware, such as video encoders or network devices, firewalls, routers, or other devices.
