The location of accidents is recorded with GPS data

The police have implemented a unique traffic safety development in the world, József Óberling, the head of the traffic police department of the National Police Headquarters (ORFK), announced at a press conference on Wednesday about the geocoded determination of the geographical location of personal injury accidents.TEK illustration_120412_Vezda113 The head of the department explained that based on an EU directive, a government decree requires the police to record the location of an incident with accurate GPS coordinates in the event of a fatal or serious road accident. The reason for this is the identification of accident-prone places due to the priority of traffic safety. 286 smartphones were procured from the independent budget of the ORFK-National Accident Prevention Committee, which were made suitable for geocoding of accident sites. He added that they are using an android application and no further data recording is required after the data has been recorded. Together with the development, all accident scene personnel on duty in the country will have such equipment in the country through the purchase of less than HUF 100 per piece.

József Óberling also reported that, in addition to the legal regulations, the aim was to inform road users about traffic restrictions and events that hinder the uninterrupted operation of road traffic. Therefore, the data recorded at the scene of the accidents are forwarded to TrafficNav Kft., Where the data are processed and forwarded to devices capable of receiving the TMC (Traffic Message Channel).

The processed traffic information is also available in xml format, which can be delivered to any device connected to the Internet. This includes a portable navigation device, smartphone and in-car navigation system, among others. In addition to the data, users can see on a map where the accident happened, the system also provides information on when the police are expected to complete the scene. Bence Makai, Managing Director of TrafficNav Kft., Participating in the development, emphasized that the service is free for the end user.
