And at first there was the sports camera. But that wasn’t enough for the people, they wanted to see more, so the first 360-degree cameras were born. The only problem was that they weren’t really 360 degrees.

The Excelvan camera that is now being introduced is not either, so then I felt the name of the panoramic camera much more accurate in the title as well. The most significant difference between real 360-degree and panoramic cameras is that the former has 2 lenses, while the latter has only one lens and of course an image sensor. On 360-degree cameras, the two lenses are located on two opposite sides of the camera, and most importantly, they have an ultra-wide-angle area that always covers more than 180 degrees. This is because this is how the camera software can combine the images of the lenses on both sides, and because of the wide angle, to see the same thing in a thin band, thus creating a true spherical panorama.

Standard panoramic cameras, by contrast, have only an ultra-wide-angle fisheye optic. This is also greater than 180 degrees, in our case we can speak of 220 degrees, for example. The camera image is therefore, since only one lens has a hemispherical panorama. These were said to be 360 degrees because we actually see 360 degrees in the plane of the lens, but perpendicular to it only half of the entire spherical panorama, more precisely a little more, as I mentioned above, we see 220 degrees.

Still, why is it better than a traditional sports camera? This is because a traditional sports camera, although it has a wide angle, is still more like a traditional film, on the other hand, the hemispherical panoramic recording gives you some freedom if you have the right playback software, essentially, even if it is limited, we can "look around". This is supported by the software provided with the cameras. We can use the VR mode, or the half-half mode for mobile phone 3D glasses, that is, when the software splits the image into two parts for our two eyes.

These hemispherical panoramic cameras were very expensive for a long time. This is due to the fact that they needed a more serious lens, and a larger area had to be monitored with the same good resolution, so the image sensors also had to be better. Fortunately, prices are falling sharply on these devices as well, making the panoramic camera an affordable extra these days.

Let's see the features! As you can read above, the Excelvan's camera takes a hemispherical panoramic shot. The viewing angle in this case is 360 degrees/220 degrees, so if we imagine a sphere in front of us and draw the bisector, the equator, then the camera sees the hemisphere, and "sees" 20 degrees below the equator. The full resolution is 2448 x 2448 pixels, that's approx. Corresponds to 3K resolution. It can record at 30 FPS in this resolution. At a lower resolution and a higher FPS, it is also possible to take slow-motion recordings, but the Time Lapse function is also available. Otherwise, the camera's other features do not distinguish it from a traditional sports camera. Thus, the accessories, waterproof housing and everything else are the same as for a traditional camera.

The price remained at the end. The Excelvan camera is now $ 83, or roughly $ 24. it’s a pretty bargain price for this camera, plus since it can be ordered from a warehouse in England (which now belongs to the EU), we don’t have to pay customs duties or VAT, plus the delivery time is much shorter than if we ordered from China.
