Invitel does not agree with the internet tax

Invitel Távközlési Zrt, Hungary's second largest ADSL internet service provider, does not support the extension of the cultural contribution to Internet access, it envisages supporting culture in other ways.

Invitel believes that taxing Internet access would hamper market and government efforts to eradicate digital illiteracy. The company points out that access to information is a fundamental constitutional right that is dangerous to restrict by administrative means.

Support for digital culture should not justify an extension of the contribution, as internet access itself helps the user to access digital culture. In its current form, the initiative would prevent the spread of digital culture by placing an additional burden on the means of access to culture. According to Invitel, the introduction of the new levy would also reduce the competitiveness of domestic enterprises by making the spread of Internet use more difficult.

In addition to protesting against the planned contribution, Invitel would like to express that it considers the promotion of culture to be essential, and feels its importance and responsibility; support for cultural projects has been an important part of the company’s sponsorship policy for several years. Invitel, as a tax-minded, responsible-minded company, continues to reserve the right to directly support cultural activities that it deems compatible with its values and worthy of support. The introduction of the Internet tax runs counter to the goals of developing the information society and the efforts of all telecommunications companies that have joined the government program called Netrekész to support the growth of Internet penetration and the promotion of Internet use with equity.
