Apple's fuel cell battery concept

Apple's fuel cell battery conceptIn two of Apple’s recently submitted standards, it intends to develop a completely new power supply system for future MacBooks to further extend the already great uptime.

Unfortunately, the performance gains of ultrabooks and laptops, which are developing at a rapid pace, are less and less able to be followed at the right pace by the performance of batteries. Apple therefore wants to develop a whole new system that will allow newly arriving MacBooks to be available for days or even more without recharging.

The two standards filed by Apple with the USPTO were titled “Fuel Cell System to Power a Portable Computing Device” and “Fuel Cell System Coupled to a Portable Computing Device”. This so-called “Fuel-Cell System” produces electrical energy through chemical reactions. The most commonly used "fuel" is hydrogen. These systems require constant fuel supply (hydrogen tank), but they can provide energy for much longer.

This suggests that they want to develop a hydrogen cell system that would make the use of space-consuming batteries superfluous. This would reduce both production costs and the size and weight of the energy supply system. Thus, this future technology would generate energy for portable devices in a completely environmentally friendly way, allowing them to operate for days or even weeks without recharging.

One of the main reasons Apple justified the system’s raison d’être is that we rely too much on fossil energy sources, which has led to various international conflicts. Thus, there is a growing demand for the development of systems using renewable energy sources. These are primarily intended for the MacBook family by Apple, but of course, after appropriate modifications, this very promising technology will be able to be transferred to other Apple products as well.
