Where the internet resides

Where the internet residesThe world's largest data center is located in Chicago, while Budapest is home to the largest unit in the Central and Eastern European region. In the case of centers operating in a way that is hidden from ordinary people, the main goal is to create physical and data security, but green solutions are also becoming more and more important.

There is a part of the world of the Internet that practically acts as the engine of the system, but remains hidden from the eyes of ordinary people: these are server parks. This area is constantly evolving as the use of the Internet continues to grow, as well demonstrated by Microsoft’s forecast: the company says the server park market will grow from $ 2020 billion today to $ 50 billion by 78. Smaller companies can play a significant role in growth: according to the trends, in addition to large companies, more and more SMEs working from smaller budgets are using outsourced companies, such as the so-called hosting services.

In the case of server parks, in addition to guaranteeing physical security, the goal is to create data security. New facilities are typically built to be fire, water and earthquake safe except for extreme extremes, and can only be accessed by a method that evokes an airport access system. In addition to the most stringent software, data security is usually provided by the 0-24 available operator team.

Examining the most, the world’s largest server park is in Chicago. Inside the Lakeside Technology Center, 102.000 square feet are available to run the servers. The size of the unit is well characterized by the fact that a 321760 hectolitre tank filled with a special liquid takes care of the cooling of the engine rooms. This amount of liquid would be suitable for filling more than 3 swimming pools 100 meters long, 50 meters wide and 2 meters deep. They also experiment with a number of solutions for the large amount of energy consumed by server parks. In this, an Icelandic complex is at the forefront: the data park, which is currently under construction, will be powered by hydro and geothermal power plants, and cooling will also be handled by cool local air.

Dataplex, owned by Magyar Telekom, is the market leader in Hungary. Of Deutsche Telekom's 64 European servers, the Budapest-based Dataplex is the largest on the list of Central and Eastern Europeans, with an area of approximately 14400 sqm. The object was built in the spirit of the N + 1 philosophy, i.e. for every possible disaster, there is a built-in safety brake in the system that perpetuates trouble in its germ. This is well demonstrated by the fact that in the event of a power failure, a generator system maintained under continuously preheated conditions provides electricity that could satisfy the needs of a city the size of Székesfehérvár for 3 days.
