In Africa, it costs hundreds of thousands to download a gigabyte of data

Thanks to the underdeveloped internet infrastructure on the African continent, downloading a gigabyte of data costs about $ 1800.

It costs Africa millions of dollars a year to have to carry net data traffic through Europe or North America, and phone calls have to be diverted from one African country to another. In addition, just over two percent of the continent’s 915 million residents have access to the Internet.

Of the African countries, Egypt, the Republic of South Africa, Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya and Sudan have the highest numbers of Internet users. The list leader boasts about 5 million users, while in the most recent Liberia, about a thousand have access to the World Wide Web. Some 442 people in the Western Sahara Desert have virtually no use of the Internet.
