Fujitsu introduces new BS2000 / OSD mainframe operating system

The new 2000 version of Fujitsu's BS9.0 / OSD operating system simplifies management, provides almost fully automatic installation, and supports data storage and faster integration of backups with enhanced standard features.

Fujitsu will launch its BS2000 / OSD-BC V9.0 test project in March and plan for general market launch in June 2012. The new operating system supports all shared servers in the Fujitsu Business Server S and SQ series. New to SQ200 Business Server is the ability to migrate BS2000 guest systems live. This allows for the smooth maintenance of SQ systems and the flexible and cost-effective adaptation of infrastructure resources to current needs. At version 9.0, Fujitsu software developers made a strong effort to support open standards. Thanks to the standard NFS (Network File System) protocol, BS2000 files can also be saved over network boundaries.

The new network storage capability offers full compatibility and allows less performance-critical files to be stored on cheaper NAS drives with slightly lower performance. The new software can also be used to run applications based on multiple system platforms (eg Linux in the presentation layer and BS2000 / OSD in the business logic layer). This eliminates the need to maintain platform-specific copies of files with file transfers. The new BS2000 / OSD 9.0 also supports LTO-5 media and LTO-5 drive encryption.

Other enhancements include support for PAV (Parallel Access Volume) Alias-plate devices that can also be used for paging, as well as disk I / O optimization. Currently, up to four I / O operations per device can be performed in parallel. In addition, the SHC-OSD storage host component also supports local and remote data mirroring and the snapshot function of Fujitsu ETERNUS DX disk systems, enabling fully automatic storage operation on integrated BS2000 systems.

Dr. Rolf Strotmann, Vice President, Enterprise Servers and Software, Fujitsu Technology Solutions, said: “With BS2000 / OSD mainframe operating system version 9.0, our customers can take advantage of the technologies of multiple IT environments. They can take advantage of the world of open technology, enjoy the capabilities of a modern data center infrastructure, but also about the benefits of mainframe systems - e.g. they don’t have to give up on high transaction performance, scalability, availability and reliability. ”
