Music-loving, playful viruses

In Hungary, free computer malware that promises MP3 content is the most common.

Many antivirus companies publish statistics on which pests are wreaking havoc on the Internet. ESET's NOD32 antivirus system's statistics system is also capable of reporting country-specific virus statistics, providing a comprehensive picture not only of malware spreading via e-mail, but also of computers infecting computers via the http protocol.

Music-loving, playful viruses

Data from June show that Virtumonde continues to wreak havoc in Hungary. Virtumonde primarily displays unsolicited advertisements on infected machines, causing annoyance with pop-up messages while browsing or using the operating system.

Meanwhile, the Win32 / PSW.OnLineGames family, which collects data on online players, is the most prevalent in the world, accounting for 13,29% of June infections overall. It has Trojan keyboard monitoring capabilities, available in more than 30 known versions, and hides itself as a rootkit on your computer. It passes data about online games, such as the username and password required to log in, to its creators, who use the information obtained, among other things, to turn the virtual money collected in online games and the characters built into real money. A well-structured character with the right skills can be worth hundreds of dollars to impatient players who don’t want to bother teaching themselves their warrior or wizard.

In June, the following pests spread in the largest number in Hungary:

  • Win32 / Adware.Virtumonde application: 28,56%
  • WMA / TrojanDownloader.Wimad.N Trojan: 5,61%
  • Win32 / Adware.AdMedia application: 2,35%
  • INF / Autorun virus: 1,59%
  • Win32 / Toolbar.MyWebSearch application: 1,58%
