Zeitgeist 2010: We searched

With Google Zeitgeist 2010, we gain insight into the world of online search trends. The results show that while searches for political parties do not reflect their popularity, a number of other data provide a good picture of current social trends.

Google Zeitgeist 2010 recorded Google searches worldwide, from joyous events to the most painful, from the World Cup to domestic natural disasters.

Google has made the top searches comparable by interactively displaying data, so anyone can compare the popularity of the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup, and see the world's reaction through search trends to the earthquakes in Haiti, the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico or the tragic domestic red for. We can see which of our most popular celebrity favorites, or which politician they were looking for the most, and even find out how the intensity of searches varies. With Search Trends, we can compare how these search terms or phrases relate to each other and how their popularity changes.

Which words represented the top list searches this year? In terms of international search trends, the FIFA World Cup leads the summer results high, but filtered by category, among the top searches, we find the famous vuvuzela or favorite teams like Barcelona, Juve or Real Madrid. The absolute top lists of domestic searches are social networking sites (iWiW, Facebook) and online gaming sites (farmerama, grepolis) but TV talent scouts were also very popular.

It paints an interesting picture when we look at the events in connection with which the world paid the most attention to Hungary - the important events are often not the same with foreign eyes as with Hungary. While Hungarian internet users were logically moved by the topic of the elections, this caused a barely visible increase in searches for Hungary from abroad, and the summer interruption of IMF negotiations also seemed to leave foreign seekers cold. Not so the August Anglo-Hungarian football match, although the absolute outburst in interest in the country was brought about by the October red mud disaster.

We can see that unfortunately 2010 wasn’t just about entertainment, games and social sites. The devastating earthquake in China, Chile and Haiti, the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the areas flooded by domestic red mud, or the number of flood searches also skyrocketed during the tragedies. It was a good feeling to note that at the same time, the word “donation” was also highly sought after by many Internet users, many of whom were also searching for donation opportunities.

ADDITIONAL INTERESTS:

Politics and economics
Among the economic and financial searches, most were interested in taxes and payroll calculators, as well as tenders, with the exception of the November insurance change season. These topics have moved more on internet searches than this year’s election. Interest in political parties reached its highest level before the spring elections, but it is also noteworthy that in this case, the frequency of searches does not coincide with real (embodied in votes) popularity.

Widget searches
In the field of technology, the number of searches for gadgets such as the iPhone 4, iPad, LED TV, navigation, or more recently the game of Microsoft Kinect has jumped significantly. A sure sign of the proliferation of smartphones is that HTC and Nokia are among the top 10 fastest growing searches, while the Blackberry alone no longer inspired an exceptionally large number of searches - all the more so for in-device applications.

Lifestyle
Google has looked at which keywords are the most popular for the more general lifestyle topics. Among the top 10 items on the list are terms like “horoscope” or “divination,” “name day,” or “games”. Not surprisingly, even after that, we look for such topics more often at the beginning and end of the year, that is, on the colder, fall-winter days. We pay more attention to our bodies in the summer months and at the end of November, in the period before the Christmas calorie load. Nothing proves better that this is a period when we want to change our appearance than the fact that the number of searches for the words “fitness”, “hairstyle” and “tattoo” or “tattoo” is at the forefront of this topic. Interest in diets and diets will skyrocket in January and will remain at almost the same intensity until the end of November, when we will be forced to rest on this topic for a while.
From June to the end of August, travel-related searches pound. In this case, the demand for timetables (máv, bkv, flight information) and festival tourism topics (Balaton Sound) increases, as well as the curiosity about a travel agency.
