VCDHD: a new optical media standard

The Russian-developed "Versatile Compact Disc High Density" is not intended to compete with Blu-ray.

VCDHD is not what many may think at first. The 4,7 gigabyte disc targets the market that currently belongs to DVDs. It has all the features for this:

  • Compatibility with currently available DVD players
  • In contrast to the 1,2 mm thickness of a DVD, the VCDHD is only 0,6 mm, so it is more flexible
  • More durable design, VCDHD media is much harder to damage than DVDs
  • Lower scrap rate and lower production costs than DVD
  • It can be used equally well to store data, music, or programs

The designers promise that as the technology advances, up to 15 gigabyte VCDHDs will soon be made. We will expect a significant drop in the price of DVD media from widespread use.

You can view the VCDHD website on this at the address, but for the time being only in Russian.
