Is the new Apple iPad overheating?

There have been plenty of complaints that the Apple iPad is overheating even after a short period of use. Officially, the product operates stably at ambient temperatures up to 35 degrees Celsius.

Some reports show that the new iPad can reach such high temperatures during operation that the device is already forced to signal this to the user in an error message, but in worse cases, it can even be turned off. While this may help prevent possible burns, users can still be rightly angry. The problem can probably be traced back to the retina display, which uses twice as many LEDs for backlighting as its predecessor. It’s also worth mentioning that the third-generation iPad uses a brutally powerful graphics processor - which, in addition to Samsung’s 45nm LP production, results in envelopingly high heat output. Obviously, a runtime similar to the iPad 2 could only be maintained with a more powerful battery.

Based on customer feedback, the device heats up strongly, especially in the lower left corner. Tweakers.net tracked it down with a thermal imager. The back of the iPad 2 has warmed to 28,3 degrees, which the new tablet has developed to only 5,3 degrees. This value does not seem dangerous at first glance, but there is sure to be a user who can be so bothered by it. Of course, the hottest point was around the A5X SoC.

Apple says the new iPad meets temperature standards. The company advises that anyone who detects problems should contact AppleCare.
