Downloadable openSUSE 12.1OpenSUSE 12.1 is the second release of this year.

OpenSUSE is a community project supported by Novell. Encouraging the general use of Linux, openSUSE is a free distribution that forms the basis of the SUSE Linux Enterprise product family.

OpenSUSE 12.1 ships GNOME 3.2, which introduces the Gnome Shell. GNOME 3.2 has seen significant improvements, such as improved handling of smaller screens and multi-screen settings. This release also brings a new document manager, as well as better color management technologies and automatic rotation on touch screen devices.

The new distribution comes with KDE Plasma Desktop version 4.7 as the default workspace. This is the first major Linux distribution to deliver the new KolorManager and Oyranos color management tools. Another important innovation is the replacement of KPackageKit, which will now be replaced by Apper to simplify application installation and removal.

Plasma Active, the new "tablet project" of the KDE community, is not yet an integral part of the openSUSE 12.1 release, but users with a tablet can install Plasma Active from the KDE community repository. The integration of Plasma Active into the next release of openSUSE is currently in full swing.

Neither Xfce nor LXDE came with a major update, but minor improvements have been made and are included in this release. This includes better theming options and desktop integration.

OpenSUSE 12.1 features the latest web browsers (Chromium 16), the Horde 4 Groupware framework, and up-to-date cloud and virtualization technologies. The default browser is still Mozilla Firefox. Thanks to the new kernel, openSUSE can now run in the Amazon EC2 cloud without modification. On the host side, the latest virt-manager and open-vm-tools provide easy management of various virtualization solutions (Xeb 4.1, KVM, Virtualbox). The new version includes the unique Snapper tool, the systemd init system and the Google Go language.
