[Freemail] celebrates its tenth birthday

Today, more than 3,1 million people use the free mail system.

The [freemail] mail system, set up on 1997 October 2, was designed to give everyone their own e-mail address, which was not at all common at the time, which was still historic by e-society. Already in the initial period, two hundred new electronic mailboxes were created daily. The first one million mailboxes were created in five years, and it only took two years to register another one million email addresses. And less than a year has passed between the creation of the two and three million mailboxes.

The operation was taken over by Matávnet (later Axelero, then T-Online Hungary) from the founder of the service, the Cultural and Communication Center of the Soros Foundation, in 1999, and today it operates as a service of [origo] Zrt.

The spectacular development of [freemail] is characterized by the fact that a total of more than 13,4 million mailboxes have been opened in recent years and the number of active users exceeds 3,1 million. Of course, this number does not include mailboxes that have not been logged in for more than three months - they will be deleted automatically.

The popularity of [freemail] is further revealed by the 11 million daily email traffic. 2 million people log in to the system's web interface every day, which means more than 850 thousand unique users. Another interesting data is that the number of concurrent users is close to 60, and its data traffic is more than 0.5Gb / s during peak hours.

More than 11 million emails arrive in a [freemail] mailbox every day, but that number certainly doesn’t include the extremely large amount of spam, which would mean an additional more than seven million emails a day. Mass transmission and storage, as opposed to the initial 1 piece, is currently performed by sixty-two server machines, eighteen of which deal exclusively with the identification and disposal of spam.

The number of [freemail] users has grown dynamically in recent years, due to the spread of the Internet as well as the renewal of the service. The brand new exterior email service now comes with a larger 1 gigabyte of free storage, and in addition to correspondence, you can also make phone calls, chat, and send and share pictures and postcards.
