Samsung introduces SID 2007: 178cm, 100Hz full HD LCD; flexible color e-paper and 101 cm LED backlit "Screen of the Year"
Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest manufacturer of TFT-LCD (thin film transistor, liquid crystal) displays, will be showcasing its two flagship products as well as some extremely promising concept prototypes at SID 22 (Society for Display) on May 24-2007.
At the 45th exhibition, Samsung will unveil its 101cm LED-backlit LCD TV, which won this year’s SID Gold Medal as “Screen of the Year”. The 101cm LED backlit screen has a current dynamic contrast ratio of 10: 000, which is five times larger than CCFL backlit LCD screens. Saturation is also higher than before, at 1% of the NTSC standard. These enhancements will help bring LED-backlit LCD TVs into the mainstream market, and the award won recognizes exactly that.
The presentation of the technical and quality achievements will also showcase the largest mass-produced LCD TV screen. Equipped with Samsung’s own 100 Hz Motion Plus technology, the new 101cm LCD screen calculates and inserts frames showing an intermediate phase from the available frame information, making movies crystal clear.
Also of great interest is the world’s largest color “electronic paper” (e-paper) issued by Samsung, a flexible plastic display that shows an undistorted color image even when the surface is bent. A4-size, 36cm diagonal e-paper can still show a still image after being turned off. For this concept model, the company used a low-temperature 130 ° C amorphous (non-crystalline) silicone additive to prevent distortion of the plastic substrate.
In addition to color e-paper, the world's largest (101 cm) black-and-white e-paper will also debut at the exhibition. The display is an EPD (electrophoretic display) capable of creating extra large digital displays (DIDs) with HD resolution (1366 × 768 pixels). In addition to these features, its power consumption is also remarkably low: 300mW per frame, which is 1 / 1500th of a traditional LCD display.
Samsung Electronics' booth at the SID will focus on the picture quality of LCD TVs and the latest technological developments in LCD TVs, including LED backlighting, rich color saturation, natural deep black reproduction and a very high contrast ratio for sharp images. The natural deep black colors thus highlight and turn the colors that appear into a lifeless brilliant cavalcade.
Other notable products at this year’s SID include a 61cm LED-backlit LCD monitor with ample space for two side-by-side A4 pages and even plenty of Windows Vista Sidebar. The company will also be exhibiting a double-sided, 5,6cm LCD screen for mobile phones.
