Rambus: 8x faster memory than DDR3

The company, famous for its many lawsuits, is now exceptionally flashing a big one not in court but in development.

Rambus can often be heard or read about in its many court cases, where it accuses many competitors and other companies of infringing on several Rambus patents. This time, however, not another lawsuit, but a new development, more precisely a new memory, came to light from the company’s workshop. The novelty - simply named Rambus RAM - looks quite promising, as it is capable of 3x faster tempo than DDR8 chips with lower power consumption. In concrete numbers, this means that chips made with the 40 nm process have a data throughput of 20 Gb / s. In contrast, a DDR3 chip is capable of 2,4 Gb / s, while GDDR5 has a value of 7 Gb / s. Said energy consumption is 6 mW per gigabit.

Another aspect, also not to be overlooked, is that the new development is backward compatible with DDR3 and GDDR5, so they can be safely replaced with the Rambus solution. The full official announcement here can be read.
