Radeon 3870 X2 + 3870 + 3850 = CrossFireX

Real mixed cold cuts - spiced with measurement results.

Now let's not start with 3dfx SLI, let's just say that SLI / CF technology has so far meant pairing two video cards for the majority. In 2008, the time has come for us to finally become aware: we don’t just have to think about connecting two VGAs, and especially not two identical GPUs - at least as far as AMD’s solution is concerned.

2 x HD 3870

With CrossFireX technology, you can connect up to four graphics CPUs with just three video cards. All you need is a Radeon HD 3870 X2, an HD 3870 and an HD 3850 (of course, the two are a GPU delicacy interchangeable). The idea may seem a bit morbid at first hearing, but the point is that it is workable, and perhaps in real life there may be a situation where we may need this solution.

Fudzilla staff have published preliminary measurements for the interconnection of a 3870 and a 3850, which can be found by clicking on the source reference. However, when evaluating the results, keep in mind that CrossFireX will only officially be supported with Catalyst 8.3!
