Some tips to protect your vision!

Our vision is under heavy strain when we sit in front of the machine for long hours. Here are some suggestions that will help you benefit.

Some tips to protect your vision!

Feel free to enlarge the letters on the website and in a text editor!

We have already explained in the previous article the risks of reading texts that are too small. So strive for the optimal level of magnification. In most applications, all you have to do is press the Control button and then use the scroll wheel to set the appropriate level.

Read offline!

Working in front of a monitor is not always beneficial in terms of productivity. If you have the opportunity, use an e-book reader. Not only is a longer article or document more convenient (we can take it out outdoors, even strong sunlight is not an obstacle), but it is also much more eye-catching to study through it. It’s worth noting that smartphones and tablets are unfortunately no better than monitors in this regard.

Follow the "20-20-20" rule!

The machines (usually) withstand all day work well, so it’s easy to forget about the rest time - “I’m still finishing this, I’ll just check it out, I’ll send this quickly, etc.” However, the so-called “20-20-20” recommendation is definitely worth keeping in mind, i.e. a 20-second break every 20 minutes when looking at a distance of at least 20 feet (about 6,0 meters).

Adjust the height of the monitor correctly

Sitting in front of the computer, we blink less, which is a straight path to dry eyes. To avoid this, you should accept the following suggestion: the top line of the screen should be slightly below eye level!

Relaxation

Optimally, we should take one, but rather two, longer breaks in an 8-hour shift. In this case, be sure to get up from the machine, walk a little, close your eyes. As much as possible, try to relax in your head as well. If we still can't move away from the table, there are still some simple exercises to do: head circumference, shoulder movement, arm extension, and so on.

Pay attention to the lighting!

This is a very common problem; too much light can cause premature eye strain! Monitor manufacturers usually set very high brightness and contrast at the factory to achieve a visually pleasing look. Decrease these values until reading is as comfortable as possible.

lighting

The above may be followed by an assessment of the ambient light conditions. It is important to find the optimal level here as well. If it’s too dark, we tend to adjust the monitor brightness higher. At the other extreme, the chances of reflections increase, and the eyes may be exposed to excessive light due to the white sheets of paper lying around the computer.

Use a blue light filter.

Developers have worked hard on this topic in recent years: in addition to Windows 10, iOS and Android also come with the so-called night mode at the factory. Timing can be applied to all of the systems listed above, and if you want even more options, you can explore great alternatives.

Finally, here are some more suggestions to close:

  • If we can, let’s exercise our eyes from time to time: look at a nearby object and then at a distant point!
  • Make sure you have proper hydration and a healthy diet!
  • Avoid strenuous activity after working hours: e.g. reading with incorrect font size, long TV, etc.!
  • If you use contact lenses, ask your ophthalmologist which one is best for computer work. It is recommended to use a home and a work eye drop separately.
  • Let's check our vision every year!
