What makes a headset good?

A good home movie, or even an engaging game, is best enjoyed if the speakers are blaring from as many sides as possible.

In such cases, you feel that the machete-wielding killer is almost on your trail, or the bullets whiz past your ears, or you can just pull your head away from a sword strike. This is perfectly feasible in the larger living room of a family home. It all starts to get more "exciting" if we want to do this in a panel or other apartment building. It also happens that if you don't live alone, you disturb your surroundings with your noisy activities. If your partner wants to wrap himself in meditative reading, it is not certain that he wants to do this in the middle of surround gunshots, and the sleeping child does not really enjoy the perfect sound effect either. Of course, many times even though you have a full home theater system, you are unable to use it properly, either because of your environment or the neighbors. Sometimes you lower the volume by more than 20% if you have already invested in a good and expensive system, but you know exactly how many chances you have to use the power in the audio stuff, which is actually unknown to you. This is when in-ear or head-mounted headsets come into play.

The characteristics of the headsets on the market are extremely different, and some important parameters must be taken into account during the choice, depending on the purpose for which we want to use them. Below, we have collected a selection of general features and functions that are worth paying attention to.

Sound quality

One of the most important features is sound quality. The headset must have a good quality microphone and speakers. It is important that the sound image is clear and understandable, not noisy or distorted. Whether you use it for work or play, or maybe movies and music are important to you, let them all sound the way they should!

Comfort, design

The headset should be comfortable even during prolonged use. Therefore, it is important that the earpieces and the headband are both padded and do not cause pain or discomfort. This also includes the wire. If it's not a wireless headset, you're tied to that device—literally. A unique design and customizable settings can also be important (such as quick, push-button functions).

Connection options

Headsets may have different connection options (such as USB, Bluetooth, or 3.5 mm jack). This must definitely be among the main selection parameters, because the headset is great if it is not compatible with the device you want to use it with (console, iOS, Android, PC, Mac, tablet, etc.)! If the wire doesn't bother you, a classic 3,5 jack headsets they bring outstanding quality at a very friendly price. They move on the gamer line, but they can be used for work as well. Today, most of them have RGB lighting, which means you can find them immediately, you don't have to grope in the dark.

If you don't want to give up the convenience of being wireless, another important parameter can be how long the headset can last on a single charge. If you've surrounded yourself with Apple gadgets, you don't have to think much about the headset. In the Apple environment, it clearly is AirPods takes the lead, both in terms of compatibility and quality, but of course it is also strong in terms of price, but fortunately there are cheaper, high-quality, wireless alternatives also for all those who do not want to spend such a large sum on it.

Durability

A headset needs to be durable and able to withstand potential impacts and wear and tear from use. No matter how you twist it, the high-quality materials and the precise, accurate design ensure a durable tool. If we want to use it while jogging, for example, it is also important that it withstands the rain. If you can withstand the harsh weather conditions, so can your headset!

Noise filtering

If quality is a priority for you, then noise filtering is definitely one of the features to highlight. There are typically two types of noise canceling headsets: active and passive noise canceling. Thanks to the material and design of the headphones, passive noise filtering can reduce noise, while active noise filtering removes infiltrating noises from our environment (for example, car traffic and other lower frequency background noise). We have to take into account the fact that these devices already belong to a higher price category.
