Milestone ahead of the VLC media player
The well-known application plays the most common multimedia files without any problems.
Even the major version number shift indicates that VideoLAN programmers are preparing for a big throw. VLC media player 3.0.0 ("WeatherWax") is currently running on the fifth release version - click on the image above to download it - and it offers the following major new features:
- Hardware acceleration has been activated on all platforms (for H.264 and H.265 encoding, both 8 and 10 bits)
- Play 4K @ 60fps and 8K videos with low (abb) CPU load
- The code base for mobile editions has been merged
- HDR and HDR tone-mapping support
- Updated audio transmission (passthrough) for HD Audio codecs
- Browse local network drives (SMB, FTP, SFTP, NFS, etc.)
- More secure password management
- New caption engine with Complex text layout and font fallback (uses an alternate font if the font does not contain the required character)
- ChromeCast support with the new framework
- Support for new formats and codecs such as WebVTT, AV1, TTML, HQX, 708 and Cineform
- 360-degree video and 3D audio support, preparation for VR content
- Updated interface on macOS - along with some code cleanup
- HiDPI GUI in Windows based environment
- Wayland (graphical display server) experimental support is being developed on Linux, OpenGL has become the default
“WeatherWax” has apparently brought a number of far-reaching improvements to the media engine, in some cases the application has made up for the shortcomings and shortcomings of the past, and in other areas it has already prepared for the novelties of the future.
