Linux Mint 12 “Lisa” released

Linux Mint 12 “Lisa” releasedThe final release of Linux Mint 12, codenamed Lisa, was released over the weekend.

We would start with an interesting thing first. In Ubuntu 11.04, released in April, Unity became the system's default user interface, replacing previously used GNOME panels. Many attribute this to the fact that the popularity of Ubuntu has plummeted and the Linux Mint has become the most popular distribution. The piquancy of the thing is that the Linux Mint releases are based on Ubuntu.

Developers, if not for a revolutionary idea, are definitely building on a commendable idea. Linux Mint integrates browser plug-ins, media codecs, and many other modules to take a heavy burden off users. The latest release includes the following new features:

  • GNOME 3 + MGSE - Disabling the MGSE components completely will give the user a clean GNOME 3 user experience, while enabling them will give them a GNOME 3 desktop environment that they can use as usual.
  • MATE - MATE is a GNOME 2 fork that is compatible with GNOME 3. Thanks to MATE, both GNOME environments can run on the same system. MATE is available on the 12 DVD version of Linux Mint. Users of the CD version can install it using the as-meta-mate package. MATE is completely new, unstable and not yet in perfect condition, but it is actively maintained and works closely with MATE developers and Linux AS.
  • New artwork (Like-Z)
  • Search Engines - Linux Mint uses Duck Go as its default search engine, and it has become easier to add additional search engines.
