The operating time of the 32 sqm iPad 2 is significantly better

We have previously reported that the manufacturing technology change will affect the APL2498 chip, which will serve on the iPad 2 in addition to the Apple TV.

AnandTech has managed to put such an iPad 2 on a test bench. Through the production of 32 nm high-k metal gates, not only the size of the A5 SoC has been significantly reduced, but also its consumption. The older version, which builds on an Apple A45 chip made with Samsung’s 5nm process, has run out after 10,1 hours of web browsing. The updated version already lasted for 11,7 hours, corresponding to a 15,8% increase. An even more significant difference emerged during the Infinity Blade 2 game, where the previous model pulled it to 6,12 hours, while the new one was viable for 7,9 hours. There was also a clear difference during video playback. The 32-nanometer iPad 2 was discharged after 15,7 hours and the 45-nm one after 13,3 hours. Detailed consumption data also show that energy demand has declined to a greater or lesser extent. 

  The physical extent of the chip fell from 122 mm² to 69,6 mm².
