IO Data: hard drives with a little extra

IO Data delighted some of the customers of its latest hard drives with a small extra gift: a virus.

IO Data has announced that some of its latest shock-resistant portable hard drives contain a virus. The affected series are the following, where “xx” is two alphanumeric characters:

  • HDP-U40: YBS0000001xx ~ YBS0005520xx
  • HDP-U60: YBT0000001xx ~ YBT000100xx
  • HDP-U80: YBV0000001xx ~ YBV0002480xx

The ominous virus is called W32/Tompai-A. IO Data announced that the virus can be easily removed with any anti-virus or possibly with “Virus Buster 2006 Internet Security”. For those for whom this is not enough, the company will exchange the device for free after virus removal for a new one, hopefully free of all such "extra" services. By the way, the HDP-U series is a silicon-covered mobile hard drive that survives being dropped from a maximum height of 80 centimeters.
