India is a real spam power

Almost ten percent of the unsolicited emails circulating in the world are sent from or through a computer in India.

Security firm Sophos said in a report released on Monday that India had overtaken the United States in less than a year and topped the spam list, the BBC news portal wrote. The rise of the South Asian country is partly explained by experts with the rapid spread of the internet in India. This is because the inexperience of novice users often leads to spammers falling victim to inadequate protection by sending out masses of unsolicited mail from their computers. It is estimated that about 80 percent of spam comes from virus-infected PCs that have been taken over by cybercriminals. Also contributing to the growth of spam data in India is the tendency for spammers to spread their unsolicited messages more and more through traditional social forms instead of traditional emails. Spam is also becoming more common on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

According to Sophos data, 9,3 percent of spam is sent from or through computers in India. The United States is in second place with 8,3 percent, and South Korea is third with 5,7 percent. In the "Dirty Twelve" list, the fourth most spamming countries are Indonesia and Russia (5 percent each), followed by Italy (5), then Brazil (4,9), Poland (4,3), Pakistan (3,9 ), Vietnam (3,3) and Taiwan (3,2). Peru closes the list with 2,9 percent.
