Quick and easy content sharing with Samsung's new Smart Hub optical drive

Samsung is expected to introduce its new, eco-friendly optical drive named SE-208BW in Hungary early next year, which is unique among optical drives, has networking capabilities, and can even be used to amplify a weak Wi-Fi signal.

The device primarily functions as a CD and DVD burner, but also supports the DLNA standard, so you can establish a wireless connection between the SE-208BW and DLNA-compatible electronic devices and display the contents stored on the drive on your smartphone, tablet or just the Smart TV.

Weighing just 380 grams and measuring 140mm x 21,5mm x 200mm, the SE-208BW when connected to Ethernet can also be used as a wireless access point (AP) and repeater to amplify a weak Wi-Fi signal. The sleek, glossy optional Allshare (DLNA) technology means that multimedia content, movies and music stored on it can be streamed wirelessly to a DLNA-compatible smartphone, tablet or computer, for example. For DLNA-enabled TVs, the menu allows you to view the contents of the drive, which can also be played and recorded on CDs and DVDs. The SE-208BW also offers a smart data backup solution: wireless connectivity lets you save content stored on your smartphone or tablet to a CD or DVD without turning on your desktop or laptop. The drive also supports Dynamic DNS, which means it can act as a stand-alone server. All you have to do is connect the external hard drive or USB drive and the Internet LAN cable to the SE-208BW, and your own cloud, or cloud-based server, has already been set up.

The SE-208BW is fully compatible with major operating systems, including Windows 7 and Macintosh OS X. The device is equipped with Buffer Under Run technology, which prevents buffer clearing errors that can occur when the write speed exceeds the data transfer rate. Additionally, when you run multiple programs at the same time, the CD or DVD burns correctly.

The DVD burner provides the following write speeds for different types of discs: 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-RW, 8X DVD ± R, 5X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD + R Dual Layer, 6X DVD-R Dual Layer, 8X DVD + RW and 6X DVD-RW.

Samsung's external optical drive is a low-energy, environmentally friendly product made with lead-free soldering technology that meets international environmental standards that limit the use of hazardous materials.

The SE-208BW is expected to be available in Hungary from the beginning of 2012.
