I expected much less than I got, mainly because I didn’t even pay much for it.

Gocomma 168 is also a nostalgia console test

Introductory

Many - I dare not write down how many years ago computer games were a lot of fun, yet they were quite simple programs. Not only the gameplay, the graphics also seem interesting to today’s eyes. Nevertheless, we played a lot, we were able to spend evenings before a program. Today, I think back to these times with real nostalgia, if only because I can recall the past youth in this way.

The tiny consoles that are getting bigger and cheaper these days are trying to evoke these nostalgic times, and although I’m shooting the joke with it, they are succeeding. I ordered the console marked with the name Gocomma precisely because I was wondering if I would get the old feeling. I didn't really trust him, as we are talking about a device cheaper than 5000 forints, but it worked wonders.

Wrapping

The console comes to us in a 10 x 15 x 6 inch black box. The cardboard itself is a bit nostalgic, simple graphics, a font reminiscent of old times, so we get the basic atmosphere before removing the cover.

Opening the box, you will find the console in a white antistatic bag and all the accessories underneath, which in this case means two cables and an instruction manual in English. We won't need much of the latter anyway, you can feel in control in a matter of moments. One of the cables is a USB cord to charge the console, the other is an RCA-Jack cable to send the picture and sound of the games to our television.

Not much, but enough, we won’t really need anything else to play. If I want to be very maximalist, I would consider it a good idea to have a traditional gamepad that we could hook up to the console and use if we want to mario on TV.

External

The console itself is a palm-sized structure, the front of which is divided in two. Below the controls, above it is a 3-inch display. The buttons are reminiscent of old controllers anyway, so if someone is still in their “hands” the game can easily switch to it. Honestly, I didn’t remember the old parties that much anymore, yet I quickly found harmony.

The console also includes a built-in speaker, with a grille on the front panel. Luckily, they put it in a place where we don’t cover it with our hands while playing. This results in the volume control at the bottom left of the cover facing the front to be unwound properly so that the game is not disturbingly loud.

Due to the cables, there are a total of two connectors on the top of the console next to the power button. These, as you may have already read, are needed to charge the battery and transmit the game to the TV.

Use

First, it’s important to describe that the console itself is really tiny, but only so much that it’s just comfortable to hold. He didn’t even lose it in my big hand, and it looked absolutely fine in my pair of graceful ducks.

When you turn on the hardware with the switch on the top edge, a language selection menu appears on the display. It shows up every time it starts up, so it doesn't keep the setting. There is no inconvenience, just an extra push of a button at the beginning of the game.

Once you have selected the language - English or Chinese - you will be taken to the game selection menu. The console burned 168 games anyway, so there’s a lot to choose from. You can move between games with the four-way switch on the left. Fortunately, we can’t just use the up and down button, because it would take a pulp to spin 168 programs all the time. You can scroll with the side button, so things get a little faster. Once you have found the program, you can use the button A on the right to select and start the game.

After selecting the game, we will be greeted by the usual screen, and then the fun can start. As I wrote, the controls are familiar in moments, although anyone accustomed to mouse + key controls may be a little unfortunate.

I can’t say much about the games themselves. The old graphics, the old music and sounds, often goosebumps on my back when I launched an old favorite. The small display and low resolution guarantee that there is no problem with the speed of the graphics. It’s weird to think about how many consoles many years ago were able to move these graphics.

Summary, or is it worth buying?

I think after the introduction you all already know what I am going to write. Although it didn't cost much - its current price is 4566 forints, but I don't like to throw that much money out the window unnecessarily. So when I arrived yesterday, I unpacked a little in awe. The fear was unnecessary. The programs are just as good, just as engaging as anno. Sure, it’s different to watch on such a small display than it used to be on a TV, but luckily with the included cable, that can be fixed. I note a real retro feel would be good for a CRT TV because on the flat screen it is somehow not like that yet. Everything is good, but you understand, completeness is somehow lacking.

My plan was to give the console to a reader in a sweepstakes after writing the article, but as they say, time is running out, the caravan is moving, ideas are changing. It was quite difficult to blow it out of my couple’s hands this afternoon, which threatens to have me cook the cologne’s lunch tomorrow. It’s not like it’s a tragedy, but it rewrote my gift plan a bit. Or maybe that's why I'm giving it away? ?

The point is really that this console is beef good. No matter how crappy the graphics are, the display is small, the plastic cover is hard and knocking, when you start the game we all forget about it, we avoid obstacles, we hit the dice in Mario, we collect the gold and it is just as good to free the princess as it used to be. If you are a little open to this experience, it is well worth the 5000 Hungarian money it costs. Since we don’t have to spend on batteries, we don’t even have to worry about the battery going bad because there’s a standard Nokia battery called BL-5C in it.

Now, after two days of whining, I say the machine fits a lot in the recommended category for me. So much so that if there may not be fresh content on the site tomorrow, you will know what happened.

You can buy the console here: Gocomma 168 is a retro console

Update: After writing the article, I noticed that the same console with 400 burned-in games is already available, and it is now on sale, so it is cheaper than the one in the article, they ask for only 4280 forints!

Here you find: Gocomma 400 is a retro console
