The Hungarian hacker team has a silver medal

The team of Hungarian ethical hackers took second place in the European final of the CyberLympics world competition organized by the EC-Council.

The competition, launched for the first time this year, was launched by the EC-Council with the aim of raising awareness of information security worldwide and helping the acceptance of ethical hackers. there is also an opportunity to discover talent and develop new methods.

 The structure of the race is based on a simple concept: for seven hours, teams are constantly competing against each other, everyone has machines that need to be protected from outside attacks, and machines that are protected by others need to be constantly attacked. He also gave 4-5 padlocks as an additional task, and these must be unlocked without a key (lockpicking). You can earn points with three things: hacking servers, making protected servers available, and opening padlocks.

The biggest challenge is to implement collaboration within the team, as we are talking about a heterogeneous environment (Windows Active Directory, Exchange, Linux servers, MySQL, PostgreSQL servers), and the number of servers also exceeds the number of team members. All of this needs to be accomplished while also being able to crack other people’s machines. It is not enough just to know the defense mechanisms, because without an attack there is no victory, but at the same time it is not enough to just attack, because in the meantime you can lose a lot of points on the servers to be protected. The competition is hampered by the fact that the directors can restore already hardened machines to a vulnerable state at any random time as a “business interruption” without any information. 

The fight was won by the Dutch team Deloitte. Five of the six-place Hungarian team in the second place were information security experts from kancellar.hu, and the sixth was a lockpicking expert.

The team of kancellar.hu was constantly at the forefront during the competition, it was able to win the second place in the European regional final in a very close competition, thus qualifying for the Global Final, which will be held in the USA in 2012, with the participation of the participants.
