Several insurers are tightening the rules on compensation for computers and plasma TVs that have been damaged in a lightning strike, henceforth paying only those who have equipped so-called low-voltage electronic entertainment devices with both lightning and surge protection, insurance broker CLB said. At Aegon, the surge protection standard only applies to the new type of home insurance policy. The reason for the tightening is that there is too much so-called secondary storm damage. According to the brokerage firm, it is no coincidence that this has just happened, as only the last two months have been hit by storms with such strong lightning in various parts of the country that risk bearers have had to pay hundreds of millions of forints. A significant part of the compensation was for damaged electronic equipment, including consumer electronics damaged as a so-called secondary effect of the lightning strike.

According to the brokerage company, surge protection against surge protection is still not a condition for other electrical household appliances, building services equipment, air conditioners, door openers and alarms belonging to the household goods category.
CLB points out that a cheaper and simpler solution than surge protection is to unplug the equipment in a storm, and then even the biggest lightning strike will not destroy it.

Aegon Hungary will continue to indemnify the damages caused by the lightning strike on its existing contracts on unchanged terms. Last year, 14 cases of storm damage were reported to Aegon, for which it paid a total of HUF 1 billion. The surge protection requirement in the CLB notice only applies to the new type of home insurance policy, the company said.

In response to CLB's news, Generali also announced that it would not change the terms of its insurance contracts, ie it would indemnify for damage to electrical machinery, appliances and equipment caused by the effects of surges or induction due to lightning. This is also considered important because recently such storms have been accompanied by more and more such damage, in the recent stormy period, for example, 39 percent of storm damage reports came due to lightning, amounting to HUF 100 million.

Generali registered 15 lightning-related claims this year. The insurer also stated that it operates an expert partner service network, after the damage assessment the damaged household and electronic appliances are removed from the site, repaired and then returned to the owners.
