The processor market has strengthened

Unfortunately, the title is only true based on data from the second quarter, with the decline still continuing compared to the same period last year.

Mercury Research reports that shipments rose 13,8 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter, but that result is still 2,9 percent lower than the same period last year.

Intel holds 80,5 percent of the total processor market, a result 0,5 percent higher than last year. During this time, AMD’s share fell to 18,7 percent, down 0,1 percent from a similar figure last year. VIA’s results are not encouraging either, as 0,9 per cent of the total market is theirs, compared to 1,3 per cent in the same period last year. It is suspected that behind the decline is the advance of low-cost Intel processors.

According to an analyst at Mercury Research, the improving results for the second quarter show a return to consumer confidence and a easing of the problems caused by the financial crisis. In their view, the positive effects could lead to further improvement in the next quarter as well.
