Japan’s Elpida, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of DRAM chips, has announced plans for the near future. According to them, the manufacturer will not only finalize the 25 nm production lines this year, but will also start mass production. The first specimens have already been prepared. The new process allows fresh DRAM chips to absorb 30% less space than their 30nm counterparts, which in theory means 30% better yields. Consumption - also compared to the previous generation - can be as much as 15% (at load) or 20% (at standby). The new DDR3 standard DRAM chip has a capacity of 2 Gbit and a speed that can be increased above 1.866 MHz. The operating voltage is 1,5 volts at this frequency and 1.600 volts at 1,35 MHz.

The manufacturer wants to start mass production in July, while the start of mass production of the 4 Gbit versions is dated to the end of the year. For the latter versions, Elpida engineers predict a 44% improvement in yield. The official document downloadable from the company side.
