The first DDR4 memory module is ready

Samsung has unexpectedly unveiled the prototype, but much remains to be done for mass production.

Samsung has taken another significant step in the world of memory with the official launch of the world’s first DDR4 memory module. The inserts on the prototype were made by the 30 nm method. Compared to the DDR3 line, they consume 40% less energy, which is mostly due to the significantly lower operating voltage, which is only 1,2 volts compared to the 3 value of DDR1,5. Current DDR4 chips can dictate a rate of 2.133 Mbit / s, but the company says the new standard will make 3.200 Mbit / s available. DDR3 chips are capable of 1.600 Mbit / s speeds.

As expected, JEDEC could finalize the DDR4 line later this year, so the first mass products could appear in 2012.
