The case of DDR3 GeIL RAMs with an ASUS P6T Deluxe

What is the first thing we can say in the knowledge of the test results? Maybe the big hardware gurus don't even show up anymore, but let's take a look: even the worst data transfer result was well above 9000 MB / s, and the latency didn't creep above 40 ns. This phenomenon is basically due to two reasons: one is the integrated memory controller (ICH) - which is actually only new to Intel - and the other is the bandwidth provided by DDR3 RAMs.

A year ago, we said: good-good that DDR3 modules are already here, but it still doesn't represent a real alternative to its predecessor (for the crowd). By now, the situation has changed a bit, and this is mostly due to the price drop. If we look at the price / performance ratio, neither is better than the other. However, the situation is not that simple, as we need to think in terms of system. In the case of DDR2, it is useless to cross the 10 limit in vain if we do not find any of the boards with the LGA000 socket that would receive DDR775 and reach the level typical of its DDR3 relative. If you want to keep up with progress and need DDR2, let’s wink at either the LGA3 or the Socket AM1366.

And that’s where we got to where our whole article was written: DDR3 seems to be a great solution for Core i7, and we can safely forget about DDR2. The only beauty of the thing is the 1,65 V limit - Intel's recommendation - but newer and newer memory packs that can keep up with the specifications are appearing (a good example of this is our 1333 MHz modules, which are 1,5 V operating voltage at the base clock signal).

We appreciate the memory packages we have! The easiest - and most difficult - thing to do is with the GeIL Ultra. Due to our Core i7 920 CPU, we were unable to run the memories at a clock speed higher than 1667 MHz, which (also) resulted in us not being able to really assess the capabilities of these tuning modules. We hypothesize that 1800 MHz would also be (easily) available in other systems. The Ultras were sympathetic to us, but we really can’t appreciate them.

The situation is a bit similar with the 1600 Value package: with our Core i7 processor, we simply could not see "where it ends". But that still made us like it, since it carried the 1066-5-5-5 timings casually at 15 MHz.

We left our favorite package at the end: GeIL Value 3 × 2 GB 1333/C9. We were a little afraid of overclocking the originally 1,5 V, 2 GB modules, since even the CL9 timing was on the box. As it turned out, our concern was completely unnecessary, at 1,66 V it easily managed 1667 MHz, which pleasantly surprised us. It is true that his ribs were properly warmed up, but a slowly rotating 12 cm fan cooled them almost to "freezing point". Our competitor with an excellent price/performance ratio deservedly earned the best buy address (even though not many people need 6GB of RAM yet, but then we need to take the 3GB little salt off the shelf):
