CES 2008: The first Google-based mobile device is unveiled

The first mobile phone based on the Google Android platform is named after Wistron.

Before introducing the mobile phone, it’s worth taking a moment to introduce Google Android: the universal, open standard platform includes the operating system, user interface, and key applications. A number of reputable companies have been involved in the development, including Motorola, LG, Samsung, HTC, T-Mobile, Sprint, Telefonica, Intel - to name just a few.

Don’t expect miracles from the Wistron, the GW4 is a smartly put together smartphone with the right internal content, no more, no less:

  • networks: GSM / GPRS (without EDGE)
  • processor: TI OMAP 1710 216 MHz
  • memory: 64 MB, expandable 
  • display: 2,5 \\ ”\\”, 320 × 240, touch screen
  • camera: 2 megapixels
  • internet: Wi-Fi 802.11g, Opera browser
  • operating system: MontaVista Linux 2.6

Sales of the Wistron GW4 are expected to begin as early as March, and the 3G version may land on specialty store shelves sometime before the end of the year.
