Bin Laden: bait on the net

Bin Laden: bait on the netBarely died Osama Bin Laden, cybercriminals have already ridden the news.

Upon hearing the news of Osama's death, the IT security specialists immediately knew that, as with any notable event, they could expect a flood of spam and attacks. The first wave of attacks came on Twitter just hours after the news was announced. One of the first sites to capitalize on the death of the terrorist leader was a Spanish web site that lured visitors to click with an alleged Bin Laden flash video. The player then asked for a "codec", but the downloaded file was actually an adware called hotbar.

The site of the Pakistani man who first reported the arrival of American helicopters on Twitter was also hacked. For a long time, his website delighted the person with a fake antivirus program. Fortunately, however, the site was later cleaned up.
