Today, AMD launched its 45nm server processors
AMD today saw the premiere of its server processors, codenamed Shanghai.
The Socket F (1207) socket, Shanghai codenamed Opterons, deliver higher performance with lower power consumption. For both indicators, we can talk about a 35% improvement - compared to its 65-nanometer predecessors. AMD has also improved the virtualization (AMD-V) features of the processors, tripling the size of the third-level cache (now 6 MB compared to 65 of the 2nm opterons), and their memory controller prefers 800-megahertz DDR2 memory modules.
